Video: Hypocrisy at the DNA Lounge

This show brought to you by Iron Man 2 the video game (seriously).

The DNA Lounge played host last night to Hypocrisy’s “USA Tour 2.0″. They brought a pretty good line-up overall – Scar Symmetry, Hate, Blackguard and Swashbuckle – Hypocrisy were, without a doubt, the reason most people were there. I actually arrived somewhat on time and got a chance to check out all of the bands; here’s a brief take on each one of them:

Swashbuckle

I was expecting something much worse, but these guys actually sounded really good. I’m kind of over the whole “Pirate Metal” thing, but these guys brought it and basically just had a good time. I caught the last few minutes of their set, so I’ll need to watch them again to get a full opinion. There were lots of Swashbuckle shirts in the crowd though.

Blackguard

Some people write this band off as a Children of Bodom clone, but I like them better than Bodom. For one, their stage presence is a lot better, and two, their vocalist doesn’t sound anything like Alexi. Plus there’s like 6 people in the band.

I chatted with drummer Justine Ethier after their set, because I had to find out more about the only woman I’ve ever seen as a drummer in a metal band (Kittie doesn’t count). Turns out she was classically trained on timpani orchestra drums and then just moved into metal because she liked the work that was involved. I asked her if she saw any similarities between metal and classical and, without any pauses, said “Yes.” But before I could ask her to explain she had to go finish loading up gear and all that stuff that you do as an opening metal band.

Hate

Is every Polish baby born with corpse-paint on and an inherit ability to growl like a mofo? Aside from reminding me a lot of Behemoth, these guys were pretty awesome and got the crowd really moving. They really should’ve been on before Hypocrisy, if you ask me, because Scar Symmetry…well…

Scar Symmetry

Oh my. How can one band be so popular and still sound so mediocre on stage? I used to be kind of a fan boy, and still am to some degree, but last night’s performance was sooo borrrrring. I took some video, but I got bored even uploading it and changed my mind. This is the second time I’ve seen them and have been disappointed by their set. Their song choice this time around was better at least, but man they did a good job of calming the crowd down after Hate got us all warmed-up.

Hypocrisy

Red alert! Red alert! Man-crush in progress!

Peter Tagtgren – your vocal abilities defy the laws of nature. You can’t go from the most brutal voice in the world to a 10 second scream any time you want! You just can’t!

Hypocrisy are god-damned incredible. I know the term “melodic death metal” gets thrown around like a cheap hooker on Wall Street, but if someone asked me what I wanted the term “melodic death metal” to represent then I would say, “Hypocrisy!”

If there was anything bad about Hypocrisy it was their guitar tone. I’m not sure if it was the venue, or what, but I’m pretty sure that it was the fact that they play 7 string guitars through Marshall Amps. I may be picking a fight here, but I think Marshall kind of sucks for low-end guitars. Nile use Marshall amps also with their 7 strings and they kind of sound like shit.

Overall though, it was a solid performance. If I had the whole thing on video I would post it, because a 10 minute clip doesn’t do it justice. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go print out pictures of Peter Tagtgren and post them on the wall and then try to explain to my wife why I’m ruining the new paint.

Sucks to hear that SS was so boring. How were the vocalists? Were the guitars on point? Those guys have a lot to offer a metal concert-goer even if their stage presence is no good.

    Sounds like a fun show!

You’re going to make me upload the video, aren’t you? ;)

The vocalists were fine, they sounded okay for the most part. They both were on stage together trading vocal parts except for during two songs, when one vocalist did Pitch Black Progress and the other vocalist did Mind Machine, I think…

Guitars were okay. One of the guitar players forgot a solo or something and started doing a “vocal guitar solo” over his vocal mic – a la Jack Black. That was odd.

It just seemed kind of…sterile. No ballz.

      I hear ya. BIIIIOOOMACHINERYYYYYY!!!

I was on the balcony because I was bored by Scar Symmetry, and the “vocal guitar solo thing was a technical issue. He was fooling with his pedalboard, and was trying to get it to work while playing the solo. It cut in a few times for a second, but he just said fuck it and did the vocal thing. Best part of the set IMO, just because it was entertaining while the music was not.

They were killer. I shed a small tear when everyone started chanting “DIO DIO DIO” and his shout out. Perfect night for such a heartbreaking day.

My friend and I went to this show. Swashbuckle was surprising killer, great bass tone and a lot of variety in the vocals.

Im a huge fan of BlackGuard IMO one of the greatest live bands out there, the effort and enthusiasm they put into each show is mind blowing. The best band of the night even though they only played for 20 min and didn’t use there bad ass amps (Super awesome Vader cabinets among other things)

I like Hate but way too much like Behemoth but a solid and enjoyable set

I really liked Scar Symmetry’s performance, good solos and vocals and the Clean singer couldn’t really put too much power into voice, as he mentioned during the show he was clearly sick.

Not a big fan of Hypocrisy and this show didn’t change my mind

I also thought the Dio chant was in bad taste, I think a moment of silence would have been more appropriate.

Overall a satisfying show, but as is the norm for most shows I was hoping for a better attendance

DNA Lounge is a great venue, every instrument and vocal was loud and clear. Im am definitely looking forward to seeing Warbringer on tuesday.

    See Ya then.

I’m impressed, I must say. Really rarely do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is outstanding; the issue is something that not enough people are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my search for something relating to this.
