Hellbeard Envy.
Oakland-based sludge metal band, Hellbeard (I guess “Sweetbeard” was already taken).
If you’re looking for a show to go to tonight, or looking for some new bands, then you’ll want to go checkout Hellbeard. Shoegaze / sludge rock is something I just kind of got into the past year or so, so pardon me if this post sounds semi-retarded, but I dig the way these guys really layer on the sludge. The vocals are probably the heaviest I’ve heard for this type of music, and they manage to keep it “ambient” and “hypnotic” in some parts without sacrificing any of their manhood.
The band is finishing an 8-song album that looks like it will be released sometime this year, two tracks of which are available online. From their myspace page:
We are waiting for the final touches to be done on our CD, which includes 8 brand new songs that really define the direction the band wants to go. Right now, we have one rule; whatever is gonna make things darker, scummier and heavier. And we feel this recording is a great start to that.

Dan, Thanks for the write up, the check is in the mail.. lol. But seriously, this is an awesome review despite the fact the record is not done, we are relatively new and we don’t feel like we’ve done anything yet.
