Dreaming Dead

Here are two videos of Dreaming Dead (metal from Los Angeles) playing at Red Hat in Concord.

You might recognize Elizabeth Schall, the singer/guitarist, who used to be in the band Manslaughter.
Her new band is Dreaming Dead, which was touring along with with Exhausted Prayer.
Dreaming Dead is Elizabeth Schall: Vocals/Guitars, Juan Ramirez: Bass, Michael Caffell: Drums/Vocals/Samples.

Bonus 12.31.2010 adding one from Exhausted Prayer, who played just before Dreaming Dead at same show

Unfortunately I couldn’t stay long enough for Cold Grave. Also, Elk recently lost a couple of members, so they are now down to 3 members instead of 5.
Videos of the remaining two below, Repulsive Infestation (Oakland) and Deadly Remains (Santa Rosa).

Friday the 13th Metal Massacre, some metal bands playing at Craneway Pavilion: Lungs of a Blast Furnace, The Venting Machine, St Vernon, Serpent & Seraph, plus one or two more. I was only able to catch The Venting Machine and Lungs of a Blast Furnace.
This place is CAVERNOUS. Ford used to make tanks here during World War 2. I guess this place has a long history of metal
Here is Lungs of a Blast Furnace:

This place could hold 5,000 standing (or 2,000 seated). They made it a little more “intimate” by curtaining-off the very back and front. About 4:30 into the video you get a peek at the rest of the insides of the building.
Lolz, most places won’t let you anywhere near “backstage”, yet here you had to enter from behind the stage and almost “sneak” into the area where everyone could watch the bands. This is the view ...

In fond memory:
Today we lost another member of the metal community, Matikeef “Makh” Daniels, 28, of Pacifica, the lead singer for Early Graves.
Five Members of Early Graves (San Francisco, CA) and four members of The Funeral Pyre (La Habra, CA) were heading from a show in Eugene Oregon the night before to a show in Reno Nevada. At 5:30 in the morning on Interstate 5 outside Medford Oregon the driver apparently fell asleep, and the van (which was also towing a trailer) went off the roadway and overturned in a grassy area. Makh had been in the cargo area of the van and was not wearing a seat belt when he was ejected from the van. He was pronounced dead at the scene. At least two other member of the bands were taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Three videos from Grimefest 2010.

Oakland Grimefest, your basic metal-fest in a car wash, wtf?!? When i got there, there were still some families waiting around to have their cars detailed. Meanwhile a couple of vehicles with band equipment waited patiently near the back until everything cleared out enough to unload.
Five metal bands in all: Assailant, Lobotomizer, Condemned To Live, Fiends at Feast, Feral Depravity.
I caught the first 3 bands; videos below:
Feral Depravity:

Assailant:

Fiends At Feast:

It’s all good though, DDP has a new album in the works and besides, getting all those bad-ass Bay Area thrashers on one stage is a feat in itself.
ou can see just how close you were able to get to the stage!

I was digging through the catacombs around here and stumbled across some of the earlier videos I had put up. Some of those were done with some special visual effects. I decided to re-up a couple, adding some audio-EQ just like I now routinely apply to all of my videos but which I never knew how to do in the old days. Same old visuals, but improved audio.
First is Tyrannosaurus Christ, in “Neon” color. A very theatrical band, they are “blessed” with a wicked guitar player:

Next is Black Cobra, in “Rainbow” color. For two guys, they put out a LOT of sound:

Now, I only once ever made the mistake of trying to mess with the demons of sound, dropping an octave or so on one video; but that is sacrilege, even by metal standards, so I have never done that since. Don’t wanna be chased around by some angered demon ...

Rude. Sure looks like they are trying to live up to their name…
Rude playing at Burnt Ramen last December. One of my favorite clips to listen to nowadays, they have that dark droning sound i can never seem to get enough of. They did seem to be a relatively new band on the scene since the singer couldn’t even tell if the set was over. Hrmmm, guitar for dinner — hi fiber, low calorie?
Now, Rude is another one of those bands whose proof of existence never quite materializes: No profile. They never perform again. Nobody else has heard of them. They never even come up in conversation… except when I’m ordering a burger or slice of pizza and the guy behind the counter handing me my food just totally out-of-the-blue tells me he was in the band?!? I guess they exist, I have video proof:

This show brought to you by Iron Man 2 the video game (seriously).
The DNA Lounge played host last night to Hypocrisy’s “USA Tour 2.0″. They brought a pretty good line-up overall – Scar Symmetry, Hate, Blackguard and Swashbuckle – Hypocrisy were, without a doubt, the reason most people were there. I actually arrived somewhat on time and got a chance to check out all of the bands; here’s a brief take on each one of them:
Swashbuckle
I was expecting something much worse, but these guys actually sounded really good. I’m kind of over the whole “Pirate Metal” thing, but these guys brought it and basically just had a good time. I caught the last few minutes of their set, so I’ll need to watch them again to get a full opinion. There were lots of Swashbuckle shirts in the crowd though.
Blackguard
Some people write this band off as a Children of Bodom ...

Oakland played host to what was perhaps the most “full-bodied” tour of the year this Saturday. I wouldn’t say “heaviest” tour because there have been so many crushing shows so far in 2010, but this one certainly had all the big names: Mastodon, Baroness, Between the Buried and Me, High on Fire, Priestess, Valient Thorr, Black Cobra and Bison B.C. Phew!

Recycled myspace photo (not a pic from this weekend).
Obviously the show was made even more awesome by the fact that Black Cobra and High on Fire played because they actually belonged at that show and weren’t just there because they were “from the Bay”. I heard a lot of folks say that Black Cobra and High on Fire were the highlights of the night. Another weekend, another east bay house show: “Black Metal Toga Party” (at the Dog House).
They had metalheads, punks, a keg, bbq, torches, hi-octane liquids, volume… the usual stuff. As always the music varied a bit from crust to doom to fartcore. Let’s start it off with Badr Vogu:

Farticus played last, they are more “fartcore” than anything else. They had the most fireballs and flameouts, though not until about 4:20 into their set. The crowd didn’t really try to set each other on fire very much until about 13 minutes in. Farticus video after the jump…

Shitty Fucker had started the whole evening off. This was their first gig. They had to play early so they could leave early to get over to Gilman to ...

Damn, I was looking forward to this show for a long time! Cannibal Corpse brought the house down at Slim’s last night. They played for about an hour and a half, included all of the favorites (more or less) and basically reaffirmed everyone’s beliefs that they’re the most legendary death metal band of all-time.

I didn’t get video of 1349 because I was tending to some wounds after slamming into one of the damn support poles that prevents Slim’s from caving in on itself, but honestly, I think they’re kind of boring. I know they’re pretty revered in the blackened-death-frost-norway-metal community, but I couldn’t ...
