Metal Meltdown in Berkeley (at Blakes undergroound) 9.17.2010 with Cold Grave, Deadly Remains,  Repulsive Infestation,  and Elk. Unfortunately I couldn’t stay long enough for Cold Grave.  Also, Elk recently lost a couple of members, so they are now down to 3 members instead of 5. Videos of the remaining two below, Repulsive Infestation (Oakland) and Deadly Remains (Santa Rosa). Repulsive Infestation: Deadly Remains: Haha, check out the crab-dance about 1:40 into the Deadly Remains clip … Read entire article »

In memory – Makh Daniels (singer for Early Graves)

In fond memory: Today we lost another member of the metal community, Matikeef “Makh” Daniels, 28, of Pacifica, the lead singer for Early Graves. Five Members of Early Graves (San Francisco, CA) and four members of The Funeral Pyre (La Habra, CA) were heading from a show in Eugene Oregon the night before to a show in Reno Nevada.  At 5:30 in the morning on Interstate 5 outside Medford Oregon the driver apparently fell asleep, and … Read entire article »

Tidal Wave 2010 – videos of all 14 bands

Grimefest 2010 videos (Feral Depravity, Assailant, Fiends At Feast)

Three videos from Grimefest 2010. Oakland Grimefest, your basic metal-fest in a car wash, wtf?!?   When i got there, there were still some families waiting around to have their cars detailed.  Meanwhile a couple of vehicles with band equipment waited patiently near the back until everything cleared out enough to unload. Five metal bands in all:  Assailant, Lobotomizer, Condemned To Live, Fiends at Feast, Feral Depravity. I caught the first 3 bands; videos below: Feral Depravity: Assailant: Fiends At Feast: … Read entire article »

Some DDP Videos From Last Week’s Soundwave Show

In case you weren’t able to make the Soundwave Studios show last month in Oakland, Roseman has you covered. Well, on the DDP front, at least. It’s all good though, DDP has a new album in the works and besides, getting all those bad-ass Bay Area thrashers on one stage is a feat in itself. ou can see just how close you were able to get to the stage! … Read entire article »

Dug up some special-fx metal videos from the archives…

I was digging through the catacombs around here and stumbled across some of the earlier videos I had put up.  Some of those were done with some special visual effects.  I decided to re-up a couple, adding some audio-EQ just like I now routinely apply to all of my videos but which I never knew how to do in the old days.  Same old visuals, but improved audio. First is Tyrannosaurus Christ, in “Neon” color.  A … Read entire article »

Video: Rude at Burnt Ramen

Video: Rude at Burnt Ramen

Rude.   Sure looks like they are trying to live up to their name… Rude playing at Burnt Ramen last December. One of my favorite clips to listen to nowadays, they have that dark droning sound i can never seem to get enough of.  They did seem to be a relatively new band on the scene since the singer couldn’t even tell if the set was over.  Hrmmm, guitar for dinner — hi fiber, low calorie? Now, Rude … Read entire article »

Video: Hypocrisy at the DNA Lounge

This show brought to you by Iron Man 2 the video game (seriously). The DNA Lounge played host last night to Hypocrisy’s “USA Tour 2.0″. They brought a pretty good line-up overall – Scar Symmetry, Hate, Blackguard and Swashbuckle – Hypocrisy were, without a doubt, the reason most people were there. I actually arrived somewhat on time and got a chance to check out all of the bands; here’s a brief take on each one of … Read entire article »

Video: Black Cobra Playing at the Missing Link

Oakland played host to what was perhaps the most “full-bodied” tour of the year this Saturday. I wouldn’t say “heaviest” tour because there have been so many crushing shows so far in 2010, but this one certainly had all the big names: Mastodon, Baroness, Between the Buried and Me, High on Fire, Priestess, Valient Thorr, Black Cobra and Bison B.C. Phew! Recycled myspace photo (not a pic from this weekend). Obviously the show was made even more … Read entire article »

Black Metal Toga Party (videos)

Black Metal Toga Party (videos)

Another weekend, another east bay house show: “Black Metal Toga Party” (at the Dog House). They had metalheads, punks, a keg, bbq, torches, hi-octane liquids, volume… the usual stuff.  As always the music varied a bit from crust to doom to fartcore.  Let’s start it off with Badr Vogu: Badr Vogu – at Black Metal Toga Party – 5.1.2010 roseman (kevin) | MySpace Video Farticus played last, they are more “fartcore” than anything else. Video: Skeletonwitch, Cannibal Corpse at Slim’s

Damn, I was looking forward to this show for a long time! Cannibal Corpse brought the house down at Slim’s last night. They played for about an hour and a half, included all of the favorites (more or less) and basically reaffirmed everyone’s beliefs that they’re the most legendary death metal band of all-time. As if there are any doubts amongst those out there, Corpsegrinder officially gets the trophy for “best metal head-banger”. I mean, just … Read entire article »

Slaughter By The Water Thrashfest (3 videos)

“Slaughter By The Water Thrashfest”. Who could resist? As soon as i got to the Oakland Metro Operahouse (after filming another band’s first gig) I got the camera out; just in time too, the party was about to go *nuts*! They had crowd surfing. They had beach balls. They had stagediving. They had inner tubes. They had silly-string. They had piñatas. They had inflatable sheep (any show with inflatable sheep is my kind of show). Vomblast? …Sounds Swedish

Vomblast? …Sounds Swedish

Another one our favorite local east bay Swedish bands is Vomblast. They have that deep, dark east bay Swedish sound of doom many of us crave when we’re waiting for the world to end. They don’t yet have a profile page that I know of, perhaps they don’t yet have social networking in the east bay Sweden. Vomblast was playing the first time I ever went to Burnt Ramen…maybe that’s why I keep going back there. … Read entire article »

House Shows – Hazzard’s Cure at Womansion

House Shows – Hazzard’s Cure at Womansion

One of the cool things about the house shows (especially in the east bay) is that everyone ends up naming their house.  House shows are an awful lot of fun and can be very intimate.  So intimate that you are in constant danger of falling over into the drumset The Hive.  The Swamp.  Wolves Den.  Riff.  Womansion.  Yellow Room.  Gingerbread House.  Bone House.  Red Hot Compound.  The Soundtank. Sometimes it’s in the basement. Sometimes in … Read entire article »

A Quick Video of Fear Factory From Last Night’s Show

Here’s Fear Factory performing Powershifter at the Grand Ballroom last night in SF. One of the opening bands canceled and I missed Amon Amarth (fail), but I did get to see FF’s entire set. The last time I saw them was a few years ago in Hollywood when they were on tour with Strapping Young Lad. That show was better. I have a few other observations: The banded sounded pretty awesome, but they didn’t play anything off of Archetype, which kind of sucks. I think a lot of people left after Amon Amarth. Fat people love Fear Factory. Also, I’m pretty sure Fear Factory love fat people. The Grand Ballroom still blows. -DS … Read entire article »

North Bay Metal – INTANGLED

North Bay Metal – INTANGLED

In addition to the infamous East Bay we all know and love, there is also the North Bay’s Santa Rosa area for a nice hotbed of hardcore music. House shows up there tend to have some of the wildest pits. Crust, Punk, Metal, Thrash, Grind, they got plenty of it. If it was just a little bit closer to home, I would be at tons of shows up there on a regular basis. Intangled is one … Read entire article »

Farewell To Thee, Light This City (Video)

(Photo from their last.fm page) While all the cool people were down in L.A. attending the Golden Gods awards, the rest of us scrubs were out on the town getting our fix of underground heavy metal! A New Force to be Reckoned With – Vastum (Video)

I used to work as an usher at Bill Graham concerts for over two and a half decades. I worked at the Warfield, the Kabuki, The Fillmore, Wolfgang’s, the Old Waldorf, the Greek Theater and many other venues. I got to see almost every major touring band you could think of: The Stones, The Who, The Dead, Metallica, U2, Tom Petty, Santana, and countless others over the years. Neurotoxicity (video) – some live metal from the east bay

I’d like to welcome the newest contributor to Bay Area Metal Scene, a person who we’ll simply call Roseman. I befriended Roseman through myspace some time back (yes, some people actually like myspace), and it didn’t take long to notice that he had what seemed to be just about every underground metal/rock band from the Bay Area on video – good video (all things considered for a bootleg, that is)! Epic Tales: Megadeth, Testament and Exodus in Hollywood (video, pics)

Epic Tales: Megadeth, Testament and Exodus in Hollywood (video, pics)

As much as I love hitting the open road on a beautiful California spring Wednesday morning on a trip to Hollywood, I equally hate the drive back the next day, or at night when I’m haggard and barely functioning from the night before. There are many forces at work against one, that is, should one decide to make a road trip – the main obstacle of course, being money. Nevertheless, Megadeth, Testament and Exodus skipping … Read entire article »

Bootlegs: Nile, Krisiun, Immolation

Finally! It’s been a long time coming, but I finally got to see Nile. Actually, it seems like everyone got to see Nile – it was a sold out show! I really wanted to see Krisiun as well, so I got to kill to birds with one stone. Nile were crushing. I love how epic and thematic their shows are. Dallas needs a little work on his stage banter between songs, but otherwise they worked the crowd into nothing less than a voracious frenzy. Immolation were pretty awesome, but admittedly, I don’t know as much about them as I probably should. Krisiun were just as heavy as I thought they’d be, although the crowd wasn’t at capacity at this point and wasn’t as loud as it could’ve been. Dreaming Dead I … Read entire article »

What Instrument Do You Play? I can play LASERS.

So, I came across some website where Dave Ellefson (Megadeth, Hail) is promoting some product called BEAMZ.
