Well, this is probably going to ruin my chances of interviewing anyone from Cynic, but “I calls it likes I sees it” – and what I sees is not what I wants. Although, I did speak with Paul Masvidal outside of their last show – does that partially count?
I happen to consider myself a Cynic fan – perhaps not as much as many of you out there – but it just so happens that I like Traced In Air and Focus. Some of you old-school fans came down pretty harsh on Cynic when Traced In Air came out (kind of like when Metallica released the Black Album), but I considered it a pretty good album for not having put out an album in 15 years. I recognize that Traced isn’t quite as “Death-y” as Focus, but I don’t care. For a band with only two albums over the past 17 ...

Remember that expression? “Relax, it’s the nineties.” It seemed to sum-up the general well-being in America and the world at the time. Nothing was off-limits, anyone could be or have anything. The nineties. Holy shit, that sounded like the future back then.
People were more accepting then, I think. Somehow we took a step back in the 2000’s. You never hear anyone say, “Relax, it’s 2010!” Or, “You can be anything!” Or, “I don’t care if two chicks want to get married!” Oh well. At least we have a black President.
Speaking of the 90’s – Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, STP – is it time to dust-off my flannel again? If Blind Melon come back I’m going to crap my pants.

You’ve probably heard by now that Soundgarden are back together.
Soundgarden were one of those bands I enjoyed. They were heavy-ish, not as heavy as Alice in Chains, but they had some ...

I was seriously considering open a can of haterade upon hearing that the Deftones were playing with Alice in Chains and Mastodon. However, seeing as how I’ve never seen them perform, I will hold back judgment (well, most of my judgment) until I actually watch them live.
It’s not that the Deftones are that bad, they’re just kind of…boring. Granted, their new stuff is way better than their old Nu Metal stuff, but it’s just too hard to overlook the fact that the band basically helped Nu Metal explode in popularity in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.
Personally, all I need are Alice in Chains and Mastodon – but if the “powers that be” want to try and resurrect Nu Metal in 2010, then have at it Hoss. I’ll be at the beer garden.

I’m sure you’ve heard of the “Rust in Peace” tour by now – but just in case you haven’t – it’s Megadeth, Testament and Exodus. Awesome, right!? Wrong. The only show in California is in Los Angeles. It seems like there’s a new story every day, in some form or another, about how awesome these concerts are going to be. Which is why it’s so frustrating when shows are cancelled, postponed, or not anywhere near where you live…even if you do reside in a gigantic metropolis.
Here’s a little illustration that may explain some of our frustration (click to “embiggen”):

Sonata Arctica is on tour. With a “video game” inspired band. They’re called Powerglove.
I get it. You REALLY LIKE video game music because it’s nostalgic and people instantly recognize it and people think you’re clever for being able to transcribe video game music into rock and roll. I, myself, was quite impressed with it. Ten years ago. Not anymore though. It’s a genre almost as over-done as Pirate Metal.

The thing is, this band Powerglove totally shreds. They would be a bitchin’ Power Metal band along the likes of any other modern shredding Power Metal band, if they didn’t write songs about Tetris and Super Mario. What the hell am I supposed to do after listening to this music? Go buy a Nintendo belt buckle?

You might as well strap a big sign on me that says, “I will pay you to stomp on my genitals.” For Christ-sakes, just drop the Nintendo ...
