Charred Walls of the Damned
Richard Christy’s (Death, Iced-Earth) new band, Charred Walls of the Damned (check out their myspace page) just released their first single, Ghost Town. If you didn’t know, Ripper Owens is on vocals, Steve Digorgio is on bass, and producer Jason Suecof is playing guitar. Christy left Iced Earth a few years ago to join the Howard Stern show, I was actually at his last concert in L.A. So, I’m not quite sure where this band … Read entire article »

Friday Metal to Sing Along To
It’s not all growls and screams over here, you know! Occasionally we enjoy a good melodic rock tune or two. Enter Death Pilot – a Los Angeles melodic metal / rock band that blends European metal guitar melodies with traditional hard rock and tops it off with some technical drumming and hardcore groove. Sound complicated? Well, the sound is pretty diverse. Check out the song “Treatment” from their myspace page, or the video below for their song “Until the End“. Yeti Are Unsigned?
How are these guys unsigned? Sure, they could probably do without the make-up in this video, but they sound pretty rad! YETI | MySpace Video … Read entire article »

Keepin’ it REAL
What’s the first thing that goes through your mind when I show you the picture of this band? If you said something along the lines of: “This looks like the worst hip-hop group ever.”, “Word!“, or “Yo man, I dig.” Then you’re not alone. However, I’m willing to bet that almost no one thought, “THE LORDS of HEAVY METAL SOUL!” Find out who these guys are after the jump. … Read entire article »

Ardentis – Russia’s New Ambassador
You typically haven’t heard much in the way of metal coming out of Russia in the past. Actually, I can’t think of any bands I’ve ever seen that are from the great land of perma-frost and vodka. I have a feeling that’s about to change though. Russian metal band September in the Dark is trying their hardest to get signed to Roadrunner Records, where they currently hold the #1 metal spot in the “sign me … Read entire article »

Like a Little Flamenco With Your Metal?
Expect another Yngwie video? Guess again! Berkeley’s Flametal, who get their name from combining acoustic flamenco guitars and power metal, might just be the world’s first “flamenco metal” band. I’m not sure that’s saying much, but their songs are interesting, to say the least. They get inspiration ranging anywhere from Cacophony and Slayer to George Benson and Paco de Lucia. See for yourself: The band has an album out now that is independently produced. Check their myspace for more info. … Read entire article »

Razorhoof Want to Trample You With Their E.P.
2009 is going down in the books as the year for independent record labels. The Bay Area has its share of indie bands, but I’ve never seen so many in the “loud/noise rock” genre that all strive to be well, so loud. Inspired perhaps by the success of bands like High on Fire, Saviours and a number of other Bay Area rock bands, Monterey rockers Razorhoof just finished recording a 6-track self-titled E.P. and want … Read entire article »

Friday Metal to Drink Beer To
It’s no secret that beer and metal go together like, well, beer and metal. Tankard (Germany) and Drunkard (Greece) are teaming up in a few weeks to play a show together, in what I can only guess will end up being an exhibition in drunkery and tomfoolery. Both bands obviously “likey the drinkey”, but their styles are a bit different. Tankard sticks to the more traditional German metal rock sound and Drunkard is more or … Read entire article »

One Hundred Suns
Death / Black / Ambient metal band One Hundred Suns has been making the rounds in the local club circuit for the past few years. Currently unsigned, the band put out an album earlier this year called Beneath the Hooves of Time that sounds pretty awesome, considering that fact. I really dig their hybrid style, which varies from crushing black metal to thrash beats to melodic riffs. The band is playing tomorrow night in the city … Read entire article »

Fallujah
Fans of “tech-death” and bands like The Faceless, Severed Savior and Dying Fetus will dig the sound of Fallujah. The band hails from the San Francisco Bay Area and will be playing a few shows throughout the end of the year. I’m not sure why I haven’t heard of these guys sooner, but I will definitely be keeping track. Check out their myspace page. … Read entire article »

The Best Band You Probably Haven’t Heard Of: Martriden
There’s more than just snow and blue sky up in Montana, at least these days. Along with a shit-load of dinosaur fossils, Death/Black Metal band Martriden is arguably the best thing to come out of the big-sky state. Their style is a mixture of Black, Death and Melodic metal that combines to give their music a heavy quality that is still able to maintain anthemic melodies and epic guitar riffs. In case you can’t tell, … Read entire article »
