Boy, it looks like I’ll be going to the Great American Music Hall a lot in the coming months. They’ve been announcing awesome show after awesome show. I mean, Agalloch (12/22), Godspeed You! Black Emperor (2/20) and now I hear that Oakland post/something metal legends, Neurosis will be headlining the venue on 1/15 and 1/16. To be honest, I’m not really a Neurosis super-fan, but I know that I love most of their material. I also happen to know that they are pretty selective with what shows they play, and it looks like these two shows plus a few in Seattle and Maryland Death Fest might be one of the few chances I get to see them. So come out to a legendary venue and watch a legendary band play what is likely to be an absolutely legendary set!

Tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10.

Unfortunately I couldn’t stay long enough for Cold Grave. Also, Elk recently lost a couple of members, so they are now down to 3 members instead of 5.
Videos of the remaining two below, Repulsive Infestation (Oakland) and Deadly Remains (Santa Rosa).

I had a terrible day Sunday. The 49ers got their asses kicked when they should have been the ones kicking ass. Fucking Jimmy Raye has no balls. However, there was an event on Sunday, that made the night an extremely memorable night. Iconic stoner metal three piece Sleep performed their first of two reunion shows in their home town. Parking was a hassle and expensive, boy, I’ve never paid 18 bucks to park in my whole life. After entering the Regency Ballroom, I decided to make my way over to the merch table, which I was certain would have some killer stuff for me to waste my money on. 70 bucks later, I was ready to see one of my favorite bands on the planet.
However, I was first required to see one man drone act, Thrones. If I had known a second show would be announced, I probably would have ...

I’m not sure what the power metal scene is like here in the Bay Area, and to be honest I’m not a big power metal fan myself, but I was quite excited to hear that Blind Guardian have announced a US tour for this winter. Sure enough, according to the press release, they are going to be playing the…lovely…Regency Ballroom on December 8th. There are many a complaint about sound there, but I’m 100% certain that the show will be killer anyway.

Hope to see you all there!

In fond memory:
Today we lost another member of the metal community, Matikeef “Makh” Daniels, 28, of Pacifica, the lead singer for Early Graves.
Five Members of Early Graves (San Francisco, CA) and four members of The Funeral Pyre (La Habra, CA) were heading from a show in Eugene Oregon the night before to a show in Reno Nevada. At 5:30 in the morning on Interstate 5 outside Medford Oregon the driver apparently fell asleep, and the van (which was also towing a trailer) went off the roadway and overturned in a grassy area. Makh had been in the cargo area of the van and was not wearing a seat belt when he was ejected from the van. He was pronounced dead at the scene. At least two other member of the bands were taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Sacramento technical/hardcore/experimental metal band The Antioch Synopsis has just posted 4 new tracks to their myspace page, or if you’re one of those fancy technical types you can download the torrent of their new tracks. You may not recall, but I wrote a brief description (dare I say – “synopsis”?) of the band a few months ago, outlining some up-and-coming “tech-death” bands.
TAS’s sound is kind of a combination of Job For a Cowboy meets Converge meets The Black Dahlia Murder, with more of an emphasis on the heavy riffing. Overall, I like the direction these new songs are heading in – both in the production and the style. Check out the first track, Fearless Leader: Guide Us to Oblivion for a taste of what they have to offer.
Oh, and apparently they’re looking for a new drummer as well.

Ronnie James Dio’s fight with cancer has been pretty well documented by the metal community over the past year. Obviously there was utter shock when the news broke, then there was some relief when he made a public appearance at the Golden Gods Awards and he looked pretty good. Then the Heaven and Hell tour got canceled and now we have the official news from his wife and manager that Dio has in fact, passed away.
“Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away. Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will ...

The Central Valley’s youngest tech death band, The Wrath of Vesuvius just released the artwork and track-listing yesterday for their next album, Portals Through Ophiuchus. Besides getting recently signed to Abal Records and playing a show with Whitechapel the other day, I would say that isn’t too bad for a band that looks like it just grew its pubes out last week (just kidding guys, besides, pubes are overrated anyways).
There is no release date for the album yet, but here’s how the track-listing goes:
Portals Through Ophiuchus
1. Manipulative Delusion: Anatomy of A Machine
2. The Final Reich: Battle of Abolishment
3. Doomed To Ignominy: The Serpent Bearer
4. Destroyer: Portals Through Ophiuchus
5. Eye of The Phoenix
6. Aftermath: Apocalypse Revealed
7. A World In Peril
8. Descendants of The Fallen Star
On a side note, is it me or is there a growing trend for modern tech death bands to use similar style logos and be affiliated somehow ...

Laceration should change the title of their new album from “Realms of the Unconscious” to “Keepin’ It Real” – as that would be a more appropriate description for how these thrashers approach their metal. Some bands take the melodic approach with guitar harmonies and so forth, which is cool, but Laceration pretty much just beat you in the face with their guitar riffs, growling thrash vocals and syncopated drumming. Not only are the tracks crushing, but it sounds like they got some help on the production because the mix sounds way better than on their last album. But hell, don’t take my word for it (this time), go listen to the new tracks they just released and you’ll see what I mean!
The band played at the Slaughter by the Water festival last month with Toxic Holocaust and Bonded By Blood, among others, and then just last week with Warbringer and ...

Despite my first reaction of, “Why the fuck aren’t you playing metal right now!?” I have to say, the painting he has on display (titled, Absenthe Won) is actually pretty cool:

I can see how moving from music to painting is a natural process, they’re both creative activities and they both let you express yourself. I’m not sure what this painting is supposed to mean, but it’s obvious now that it would’ve been way cooler if he designed the covers for Load and Re-Load.
Anyways, check out Newsted’s statement from the gallery’s website:

Aside from a bunch of Death Angel news, Mark goes on to talk for a few minutes about the early days of the Bay Area Metal Scene and more or less how everyone in the world envies it. Here are some news items worth mentioning:

Death Angel will be touring later this year with Soilwork.
If you weren’t aware, there’s been a few line-up changes with Death Angel the past year:

DEATH ANGEL debuted two brand new songs — “River” and “Into The Arms Of Righteous Anger” — during its appearance at last year’s Speedfest, which was held November 28, 2009 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Whoa, Saviours are playing at this year’s Ozzfest!? They’re not one of those bands you see listed in a small font at the end of the web page either – they’re listed right next to Skeletonwitch! That’s pretty gnarly, considering that they’re like the only “indie” label band in the line-up.
It’ll be interesting to see how the croud reacts, considering their style is considerably different than most all the other bands on the bill. I grabbed their most recent album, Accelerated Living in October last year, but I have yet to see them live. Although, I know they’ve been touring like demons this year in support of St. Vitus and others.
They’re playing a show at Gilman in a few weeks and then touring Europe throughout summer before Ozzfest. Here are the Ozzfest dates so far (no dates listed in NorCal yet):
08.14.2010
Devore, CA
San Manuel Amphitheater
08.17.2010
Tinley Park, IL
First Midwest Bank Amphitheater
08.19.2010
Burgettstown, PA
