Three videos from Grimefest 2010.

Oakland Grimefest, your basic metal-fest in a car wash, wtf?!? When i got there, there were still some families waiting around to have their cars detailed. Meanwhile a couple of vehicles with band equipment waited patiently near the back until everything cleared out enough to unload.
Five metal bands in all: Assailant, Lobotomizer, Condemned To Live, Fiends at Feast, Feral Depravity.
I caught the first 3 bands; videos below:
Feral Depravity:

Assailant:

Fiends At Feast:

This show brought to you by Iron Man 2 the video game (seriously).
The DNA Lounge played host last night to Hypocrisy’s “USA Tour 2.0″. They brought a pretty good line-up overall – Scar Symmetry, Hate, Blackguard and Swashbuckle – Hypocrisy were, without a doubt, the reason most people were there. I actually arrived somewhat on time and got a chance to check out all of the bands; here’s a brief take on each one of them:
Swashbuckle
I was expecting something much worse, but these guys actually sounded really good. I’m kind of over the whole “Pirate Metal” thing, but these guys brought it and basically just had a good time. I caught the last few minutes of their set, so I’ll need to watch them again to get a full opinion. There were lots of Swashbuckle shirts in the crowd though.
Blackguard
Some people write this band off as a Children of Bodom ...

Damn, I was looking forward to this show for a long time! Cannibal Corpse brought the house down at Slim’s last night. They played for about an hour and a half, included all of the favorites (more or less) and basically reaffirmed everyone’s beliefs that they’re the most legendary death metal band of all-time.
As if there are any doubts amongst those out there, Corpsegrinder officially gets the trophy for “best metal head-banger”. I mean, just look at the neck on the guy and you know he doesn’t fuck around:

1349, Skeletonwitch and Lecherous Nocturne were pretty awesome opening bands. I didn’t get video of 1349 because I was tending to some wounds after slamming into one of the damn support poles that prevents Slim’s from caving in on itself, but honestly, I think they’re kind of boring. I know they’re pretty revered in the blackened-death-frost-norway-metal community, but I couldn’t ...

“Slaughter By The Water Thrashfest”. Who could resist? As soon as i got to the Oakland Metro Operahouse (after filming another band’s first gig) I got the camera out; just in time too, the party was about to go *nuts*!
They had crowd surfing. They had beach balls. They had stagediving. They had inner tubes. They had silly-string. They had piñatas. They had inflatable sheep (any show with inflatable sheep is my kind of show).
Here is just a small teaser of what the evening was like (2nd & 3rd videos after the jump):

One of the cool things about the house shows (especially in the east bay) is that everyone ends up naming their house. House shows are an awful lot of fun and can be very intimate. So intimate that you are in constant danger of falling over into the drumset
The Hive. The Swamp. Wolves Den. Riff. Womansion. Yellow Room. Gingerbread House. Bone House. Red Hot Compound. The Soundtank.
Sometimes it’s in the basement. Sometimes in the living room. Sometimes in the backyard. At Oakland’s Womansion it’s in what used to be a garage but is now someone’s bedroom. Imagine for a moment if you had some quality metal bands playing in your bedroom for your own birthday party
Speaking of which, San Francisco’s own Hazzard’s Cure played there a couple of months ago. Yet another sort of “all-star” band composed of members of other fine Bay Area bands. From ...

Here’s Fear Factory performing Powershifter at the Grand Ballroom last night in SF. One of the opening bands canceled and I missed Amon Amarth (fail), but I did get to see FF’s entire set. The last time I saw them was a few years ago in Hollywood when they were on tour with Strapping Young Lad. That show was better.
I have a few other observations:

The banded sounded pretty awesome, but they didn’t play anything off of Archetype, which kind of sucks.
I think a lot of people left after Amon Amarth.
Fat people love Fear Factory. Also, I’m pretty sure Fear Factory love fat people.
The Grand Ballroom still blows.

In addition to the infamous East Bay we all know and love, there is also the North Bay’s Santa Rosa area for a nice hotbed of hardcore music. House shows up there tend to have some of the wildest pits. Crust, Punk, Metal, Thrash, Grind, they got plenty of it. If it was just a little bit closer to home, I would be at tons of shows up there on a regular basis.
Intangled is one of those thrash metal bands from Santa Rosa I was lucky enough to catch at the North bay Film/Art Collective. Boy these guys kinda remind me of the first time I saw Def Leppard. It was 1980, back at The Warfield in San Francisco, and we were actually more excited about the opening act Def Leppard than we were about the headliner (who i think was Pat Travers; Lolz I don’t even remember for sure ...

While all the cool people were down in L.A. attending the Golden Gods awards, the rest of us scrubs were out on the town getting our fix of underground heavy metal! In case you didn’t know, San Francisco melodic metal band Light This City are on a “farewell tour” of the west coast. They have a slightly different line-up at each show, but the show last night at Parkside included noise-punk-core band Comadre, black-death-doom band Funeral Pyre and noise-core-metal band Early Graves. There was quite a bit of “band incest” going on at this show, meaning that there was at least one member of each band that was in/is in another band on the bill, but there was still a bit of variety. I was actually looking forward to seeing each band on the bill, but Early Graves and Light This City were at the top ...

I’d like to welcome the newest contributor to Bay Area Metal Scene, a person who we’ll simply call Roseman. I befriended Roseman through myspace some time back (yes, some people actually like myspace), and it didn’t take long to notice that he had what seemed to be just about every underground metal/rock band from the Bay Area on video – good video (all things considered for a bootleg, that is)! Luckily for me, Roseman said he was down to share some of those videos on BAMS, so here we are in a little column we’ll be bringing to you as often as we can, called Sounds of the Underground. Thanks Roseman and cheers!

I love seeing live metal bands at house shows or warehouse parties, and there are plenty of those here in the East bay! Check out Neurotoxicity from Oakland playing at Victory Warehouse 2.26.2010.

All the rockers in Northern California came out to see Alice in Chains rock the Fox Theater in Oakland last night, and I mean ALL the rockers. The place was so packed most people could barely move. Luckily, we’re not most people, and we shoved (politely, of course) our asses into the pit real fast! There were young (waved to a little 5 year-old walking by) and old (the average age had to be 40+) all enjoying what is probably the only 10/10 show I’ll see this year. Everything about this show was great: the venue, the crowd, the set-list, the sound, you name it.

Check out the videos after the jump.

The rock-gods were most pleased last night.

Intro – All Secrets Known.

Moved into the pit and passed several fist-fights for Check My Brain. Seriously – the mosh etiquette last night was being intently violated. If you knock someone on their ass, ...

It seems to be occurring with greater frequency that there are multiple shows on the same night, forcing folks to choose between which bands they want to see. Luckily, there’s a thing called video. Metal4Metal.com took some video of the Periphery/Animals as Leaders show on Monday night and posted it to YouTube, which I have graciously re-posted here. I will definitely have to see these guys on their next passage through – unless, of course, Exodus is in town again that night…
Check out the videos after the jump!

METAL FUCKING MONDAY! Arch Enemy, Exodus, Arsis and Mutiny Within steam-rolled through San Francisco last night at the Grand Ballroom.
I have mixed feelings about this place, but most of them lean towards that one feeling, what’s it called? Oh yeah – MURDER. As in, “I want to murder everyone that works here.” So many rules! “Don’t stand here.” “No video allowed.” “4 dollars for water.” on and on and on. It’s like, with all these rules in place you’d think there would at least be awesome sound, but of course, it’s the complete fucking opposite. For such a grand ballroom their sound blows grand ball sacks.

I missed Mutiny Within because the Bay Bridge had traffic and because I’m always late. Arsis had a pretty good set list, but the sound was shitty and they kind of lacked stage presence. Malone looked all bummed-out and uninspired. I actually saw him ...
