Saturday Sightings
Fortunately, 99% of drivers ignore stop-signs in Berkeley anyways, so this actually isn’t that much of an endangerment. I would say that the graffiti taggers are definitely in the lead, but the band stickers are quickly gaining momentum. … Read entire article »

7 New Tech-Death Bands to Look Out For in 2010
Progressive Death, Hardcore, Tech-Death, Death Metal, call the following bands any of those genres. What ever makes you think of really fast and technical death metal with flavors of Progressive Metal. Some of these bands are signed, some are not. Many of them are from the Sacramento valley, which surprisingly have quite a few (young) death metal bands. Definitely look for some bands from the Sacramento area to be making head-way this year. Here they are, … Read entire article »

Kids Along the Mississippi
I was in a cover band many years ago, we called ourselves Sackrash. All two shows we played were legendary…amongst us. We played stuff like AIC, Metallica, STP and Down. Stone The Crow was our bread and butter. These kids may sound way better than we ever did, but at least I’m old enough to buy beer! … Read entire article »

Another European Metal Fest That Should Be in the U.S.
Wow, Bolt Thrower are way more popular than I thought they were. I mean, that song The Killchain is pretty awesome, but those guys with Testament and Behemoth seems kind of odd. 59 Euros for tickets and camping. What is that – like three thousand dollars or something? I’m just assuming… … Read entire article »

Faith No More Sold Out Back-to-Back-to-Back
This April, Faith No More will be playing back-to-back-to-back shows at the Warfield. For many of you, this is the best thing to happen since the band re-united last year. My FNM nostalgia is not quite as pronounced, as I was only 9 years-old when The Real Thing came out, but these shows will be legendary. Looks like I will be waiting until next-time to catch this show. Like many people my age, my early exposure to FNM was pretty much limited to their television performances like the ones on SNL and Arsenio Hall: I picked-up a copy of The Real Thing when I was old enough to do so, but by the mid 1990’s FNM were basically over-exposed. They were the sound track for the early 1990’s – every movie, commercial … Read entire article »

Exodus “Exhibit B” Artwork Is Killer
Bravo to the guy who designed this cover! This is how an Exodus album cover is supposed to look! Unsurprisingly, Gary Holt loves it too: To me, the artwork represents man and his affinity for bloodshed, ignorance, and all-around ability to be led like sheep to the slaughter. The image fits the songs on this record perfectly. The whole layout is going to as sick as the record itself! For reference, here’s the cover from Exhibit A. It’s … Read entire article »

And Here’s a Picture of Will Smith With Soil Work.
Just because. I assume that this was at Ozzfest during the whole Wicked Wisdom era? I haven’t heard much news about WW lately, but I assume they’re still going strong on hiatus? From the interwebs, and Ray. … Read entire article »

New Death Angel Will Be “Heaviest Album to Date”
There’s a new Death Angel album coming out this September. According to the band, it’s going to be their “heaviest album to date” (obligatory metal statement!). Personally, I’ve never really considered Death Angel that “heavy” of a band, but going heavier can never be a bad thing. After all, they are a Bay Area staple and their history alone makes them metal legends. They continue to tour and put out albums (since re-uniting in 2001) and … Read entire article »

Snakes for the Divine Gets Me All High on Fire
Most of you by now have heard at least one song from High on Fire’s new album, Snakes for the Divine, from their myspace page. If you dug the title track, or their single Frost Hammer, then you’ re going to love the rest of the album. Snakes, for lack of a better word, is bad-ass. Combining HOF’s raw and thunderous sound with some extended song writing, Snakes for the Divine really drives home the fire … Read entire article »

Alex Skolnick Skipping Out on This Testament Tour
There was a good article posted on noisecreep yesterday featuring Alex Skolnick (with video) where they discuss why Glenn Drover is playing guitar on this upcoming Megatestodus tour. Long story short, he already made commitments with his other band, The Alex Skolnick Project. Skolnick will be back in the line-up for the American Carnage, a.k.a. Megaslaytest, tour this summer/fall. Choosing Drover to fill-in was kind of an interesting choice. It would’ve been cool to see Steve … Read entire article »

Metal Video Director Needs Your Help To Make Indie Horror Flic
An independent film company here in Berkeley is helping out Metal Video Director Chad Rullman (Mastodon, Nile, et.al) raise funds for his new indie flic, Thrall. From the film’s website: Disenchanted by American horror films recent destruction via glossy CGI, rehashed re-booted re-makes, and campy, cheap thrills; writer/director Chad Rullman is on a mission to develop a truly scary and suspenseful horror movie. One that will reclaim the genre, and bring American horror films back to the heights achieved in the 70s & 80s. For 10 bucks you can get your name in the credits and tell everyone how much better you are because you support independent art. … Read entire article »

New Meshuggah Alive Disc Sounds Just Like a Studio Recording
I mean that in a good way, of course. I just listened to the entire thing and if I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought that it was just a “mix tape” they put together. Even the guitars on Bleed are completely in sync (guitar players will know how amazing a feat that is). I haven’t watched the DVD yet, but I’m sure the sound is just as good. Friggin’ MESHUGGAH! … Read entire article »

Melonumba – Are You Kidding Me?
There’s a reason I haven’t heard of Melonumba yet (I debated on putting this post in the ridiculous band names category). Is this video for real? It’s like one of those bad “Creed Shreds” over-dub videos. Apparently the band is good enough to “headline” a 10-band rock extravaganza next week at the DNA Lounge. Good lord. … Read entire article »

Heathen Return With Their New Album “The Evolution of Chaos”
I’ve been keeping tabs of Heathen over the past few months, getting teased every week with a new track or new piece of information about their latest album, The Evolution of Chaos. The album finally dropped in the United States yesterday, marking a 6 year time span since their last album, Recovered. Fans have been patiently waiting to hear new material from the Bay Area thrash legends, and the new album does not disappoint – … Read entire article »

Obscura’s New Album A Breath of Fresh Metal
I can’t remember the last time I was stoked about a new metal band coming out of Germany. Usually I’ll get an email from a German band saying, “Hey, check us out! We’re German (insert metal genre here)!” Of course, I’ll usually listen to their music because I’m a sucker, but my first impression is always the same: they sound like the villains from the Big Lebowski decided to start a mediocre metal band. Obscura obviously … Read entire article »

David Ellefson Back in Megadeth – New Band Photos Up
Alright, it might be a time for a road trip down to L.A. In case you haven’t heard, James Lomenzo isn’t in Megadeth anymore. It was an uncharacteristically quiet farewell, especially considering all the drama surrounding the two Daves over the years and Megadeth, but I’m sure that fans will be stoked to see the long-time bassist back in the mix for the upcoming Rust In Peace tour. From the Megadeth website: More photos after the jump. … Read entire article »

Happy Metalversary!
Heavy Metal has officially turned 40! The first Black Sabbath album was released on February 13, 1970 (Friday the 13th!), making today the unofficial birthday of Heavy Metal. Although, I doubt there would be much dispute. Here’s to another 40 years! … Read entire article »

Ridiculous Band Name of the Day: “Destructive Explosion of Anal Garland.”
Thanks to my brother in the Czech Republic for pointing out one of their grindcore metal bands called Destructive Explosion of Anal Garland. Not only is their band name ridiculous, their music, song titles, lyrics and logos all apparently came out of the same loony-bin. It’s good to point fun at yourself every once in a while, but these guys take it to a whole new level! Yes, that appears to be a hand coming out … Read entire article »

Black Gives Way to Bootlegs: Alice In Chains at The Fox Theater in Oakland
All the rockers in Northern California came out to see Alice in Chains rock the Fox Theater in Oakland last night, and I mean ALL the rockers. The place was so packed most people could barely move. Luckily, we’re not most people, and we shoved (politely, of course) our asses into the pit real fast! There were young (waved to a little 5 year-old walking by) and old (the average age had to be 40+) … Read entire article »

Here’s Some Clips from “The Other” Metal Monday Show This Week
It seems to be occurring with greater frequency that there are multiple shows on the same night, forcing folks to choose between which bands they want to see. Luckily, there’s a thing called video. Metal4Metal.com took some video of the Periphery/Animals as Leaders show on Monday night and posted it to YouTube, which I have graciously re-posted here. I will definitely have to see these guys on their next passage through – unless, of course, Exodus is in town again that night… Check out the videos after the jump! … Read entire article »

Another Group of Young Bucks That Play Better Than You
Kids these days. When they’re not playing their xboxes and their facebooks and their skateboarding, they’re forming shredding metal bands like The Wrath of Vesuvius. The band, just signed to Abal Records, hails from the Sacramento area and has been playing shows up and down the valley and will continue with more shows in February and March. Their sound is a kind of blend of modern death metal and deathcore, although judging by their picture … Read entire article »
