Slayer is Out of Mega/Slay/Test. Metal is Showing its Age.
Tom Araya of Slayer has to get some back surgery done this month, consequently ending post-poning the American Carnage tour run. It just donned on me that metal is really starting to show its age. It’s only a matter of time before we start hearing about hip-replacement surgeries and the crazy “oat bran lifestyle” of aging metal musicians. A lot of dudes are in their 50’s and 60’s already. That’s right – 50’s and 60’s! … Read entire article »

Steve Smyth Is Taking Over In 2010: A BAMS Exclusive Interview.
It’s fair to say that Steve Smyth is going to do more in 2010 than most musicians do in their life time. He already has an impressive resume that I touched upon in a post a few weeks ago, and now it sounds like he’ll be building that resume up even more in 2010. This year is going to be a multi-faceted year for one of metal’s most versatile guitar players. Over the past few weeks … Read entire article »

I know, it’s kind of tacky to post how many followers you have on twitter, but it turns out to be relevant. Who is the 666th follower on our twitter account? Well, it’s actually a local band called The Dust. Fuckin’ a! Thanks Dust! … Read entire article »

New Miseration Sounds Fucking Awesome
I’m writing a review for an album I haven’t even fully heard yet, I’m that confident. Miseration’s new album The Mirroring Shadow is the follow-up album to Your Demons – Their Angels, which was not a bad album, but wasn’t really an album that I could listen to over and over. It was closer to metal-core than I would’ve liked – it definitely doesn’t sound as epic and varied as Shadow does. Basically take epic Black … Read entire article »

Gotta Hand it to Phil Anselmo, He Knows How to Stir Up Some Controversy
I haven’t heard too much about Phil Anselmo this past year. I assume that Down is still together, but otherwise the only news I can find about Anselmo are about new bands he’s joining, or in this case, bands he’s hyping-up. According to this article, he really likes this Texas metal band Warbeast. That’s cool, they sound pretty decent from that one track they have on myspace. But you know, typical Phil, he’s always gotta … Read entire article »

Early Graves Releasing Album in 2010
It’s been two years since San Francisco metal/hardcore/noise rock band Early Graves released their debut album, We: The Guillotine. According to a bulletin on their myspace page, they have a new album, Goner, coming out in early 2010: San Francisco’s Early Graves will be heading into Louder Studios (Melvins, Hank III, Saviours, WITTR, etc) with Engineer/Producer Tim Green (The Fucking Champs, Nation of Ulysses) on October 28th to record their new album, aptly titled “Goner”. This … Read entire article »

NPR Post Some “Viking” Metal Albums From 2009, Odin Sheds a Tear.
NPR.org made a few headlines this past year in the metal community after recognizing a few bands like Mastodon, Alestorm and Skeletonwitch, among others, in their polls and what-have-you. However, recently one of their staff (Lars Gotrich) published an article called Viking’s Choice: Metal And Outer Sound In ‘09, in which I harshly critiqued the author’s choices (I basically told him it sucked). This is all in good fun, of course. In all actuality, I’m … Read entire article »

Laaz Rockit To Headline “Bay Area Thrash Revival” Show
I’m not sure if this qualifies as the “revival” of Bay Area thrash, but I thought the last Laaz Rockit album, Left For Dead, qualified as a pretty good “ReThrash” album. Or I guess it isn’t ReThrash if the band is an original Thrash band…damn it, I hate genre labels. … Read entire article »

Testament to Play the Entire “Legacy” Album for American Carnage Tour
Testament had a pretty awesome set list on their last tour – it was just about perfect if you ask me. Due to time constraints, for the upcoming American Carnage tour, they decided that instead of a traditional set, they’re going to play the entire album The Legacy. From KNAC.com: We decide last night that instead of putting—because we only have a 40-minute set to pick–instead of playing a medley of songs, we decided we’re going … Read entire article »

Hear Samples of Heathen’s New Album
I have a feeling Evolution of Chaos is going to be one of those “hidden gems” of 2010. While the album is already out in Japan, Chaos will not be released in America until the end of March. In the meantime, check out samples from all of the tracks here: http://www.neowing.co.jp/track_for_cdj.html?KEY=KICP-1395 … Read entire article »
