Bootlegs: Nile, Krisiun, Immolation
Finally! It’s been a long time coming, but I finally got to see Nile. Actually, it seems like everyone got to see Nile – it was a sold out show! I really wanted to see Krisiun as well, so I got to kill to birds with one stone. Nile were crushing. I love how epic and thematic their shows are. Dallas needs a little work on his stage banter between songs, but otherwise they worked the crowd into nothing less than a voracious frenzy. Immolation were pretty awesome, but admittedly, I don’t know as much about them as I probably should. Krisiun were just as heavy as I thought they’d be, although the crowd wasn’t at capacity at this point and wasn’t as loud as it could’ve been. Dreaming Dead I … Read entire article »

There is a Metal Mole Covering The Grammy’s This Weekend!
Ryan Seacrest can piss-off. The Grammy’s have someone new who knows how to represent rock and metal. Check out http://www.grammy.com/live throughout the weekend to watch Jamie Harvey, aka the Hard Rock Chick, interview and raise hell on the red carpet! Sadly, there is no Best Metal Album category, but there is a Best Metal Performance category in which Slayer, Megadeth, Judas Priest, Ministry and Lamb of God are nominees. Not a bad selection! … Read entire article »

Slaughterbox: Embrace your “inner squeal”.
As if the artwork didn’t give it away, Northern California Death Metal band, Slaughterbox, have embraced their inner pig-squeal with a furious assault of Death Metal blast-beats and squealing vocals. Seriously, I don’t think I’ve heard drumbeats this fast anywhere. Is that even human? The band is currently in writing mode and will be recording next month. Until then, check out their tunes on their myspace page. … Read entire article »

New Film to Feature Death Metal Artwork
If you though Daniel Craig was scary as James Bond, just wait until you see Dream House. Apparently he and Naomi Watts are going to star in some “psychological, suprernatural thriller” (i.e., running away from ghosts) in 2011. The film will be using an assortment of Death Metal poster artwork from MONSTROSITY vocalist and metal illustrator Mike Hrubovcak of Visualdarkness.Com as background set dressing for a location in the film. There is a young metal couple … Read entire article »

Anvil’s Drummer is Named Robb Reiner?
Maybe I should know this, but I didn’t make it through the entire Anvil movie so I don’t know any better. No wonder these guys are so popular. They remind you of Spinal Tap. Robb Reiner: Rob Reiner: Anyways. Spinal Tap ANVIL are playing at The Fillmore next week. … Read entire article »

What Instrument Do You Play? I can play LASERS.
So, I came across some website where Dave Ellefson (Megadeth, Hail) is promoting some product called BEAMZ. Apparently it’s an “instrument” composed of a bunch of laser beams (ohh, I get the name now) that allow you play pre-recorded music. Sounds cool, right? Lasers! Music! DAVE ELLEFSON! What more do you need!?! Cue token white family! On second thought, maybe I’ll just save up money for Rock Band. … Read entire article »

Megatestodus skipping the Bay!?!
I’m sure you’ve heard of the “Rust in Peace” tour by now – but just in case you haven’t – it’s Megadeth, Testament and Exodus. Awesome, right!? Wrong. The only show in California is in Los Angeles. It seems like there’s a new story every day, in some form or another, about how awesome these concerts are going to be. Which is why it’s so frustrating when shows are cancelled, postponed, or not anywhere near … Read entire article »

UGZ Speedtrials: Play fast or DIE
Okay, so there’s this show that happens every year at Gilman in Berkeley called the UGZ Speed Trials. Basically take a bunch of unsigned metal bands, give them 15 minutes to play as fast as they can, and the fastest band gets dubbed the winner. I guess it’s a cool idea, but I don’t really have anything to compare it to. I dig the flyer though. … Read entire article »

Poll: Do you buy albums on vinyl?
Is it me, or are more bands releasing albums on vinyl these days? I think the last few shows I’ve been to there have been vinyl records for sale at every single merch booth, so someone must be buying them. I can see why vinyl might be getting more popular; as they represent a sort of counter-culture to the digital revolution. Offering a way perhaps to “connect” more with the band while offering up feelings … Read entire article »

The loudest 2-piece rock/metal band to come out of the Bay Area, Black Cobra, are playing a free show on Friday, February 5th at Amoeba Music in San Francisco. This is pretty awesome, especially considering the fact that they’re playing Hellfest this summer, one of the biggest metal festivals in the world. Ruffians Set to Open for Hammerfall in March
Hammerfall is rolling through San Francisco in March to set fire with some anthemic Swedish power metal. It’s fitting then, that the oldest most veteran power metal band in the Bay Area, Ruffians, should open up the show. The Berkeley power metal band released their first album in 1985, took a break for several years and is now working on an album for 2010. Ruffians will be hitting Europe this spring for a few rock … Read entire article »

New Fallujah Tracks – Dayumm!
As of right now, these guys get the gold metal for the most technical Bay Area metal band. They just released two tracks on their myspace page, Prison of the Mind and Hallucination that are mind-blowingly good, especially for a bunch of young bucks. I think they’re working on an entire new album, I seriously can’t wait to hear it. Don’t take my word though, check it out for yourself! … Read entire article »

Scion Rock Fest is Free! Note: It’s in Columbus, Ohio.
According to the Scion Rock Fest website, all you have to do is RSVP to get a ticket to this show. That’s pretty cool, considering there are some pretty awesome bands on the bill, including Bay Area locals Ludicra and Saviours. I’ve never been to Ohio, but there seems to be a lot of awesome metal bands that come out of there. In other news – you should check out this Cleveland tourism video: … Read entire article »

Interesting Interpretation of a Mosh Pit

Future Prog
The Bay Area has a new progressive metal band (well, new to me), and they have a few heavy hitters laying down some powerful progressive tunes. Future’s End, which features familiar names like Steve DiGiorgio (bass) and Jon Allen (drums), released their album Memoirs of a Broken Man last year and it recently was voted the #1 progressive metal album in 2009 by USA Progressive Music Magazine. It goes without saying then, that fans of … Read entire article »

Poll: Metal Cruise Ships – Viking or Vile?
A few weeks ago I posted about a metal cruise ship that was setting sail with Amon Amarth and a ton of other bands, now it appears there is a smaller, cheaper version setting sail this spring. The Triton Power Cruise will leave Miami for the Bahamas in April and May, packed with a plethora of metal bands. Bootlegs: BTBAM, Cynic and Devin Townsend.
It was a sold-out Monday night show last night at Slim’s! I didn’t take any chances this time with tickets, since the last time Cynic came through town with Meshuggah it sold out way in advance. Overall, the show was pretty prog-tastic! Scale the Summit were a great opening band, Devin Townsend was his usual charismatic self, Cynic shredded and BTBAM rocked-it pretty hard! As usual, I was able to grab a few bootlegs. Enjoy! … Read entire article »
